The skeleton pattern came from the Everyday Paper Dolls Cartridge.

I resized it to the length that would fit an old set of sweat pants & long sleeved shirt, by cutting a couple pieces and placing on the pants and shirt to ensure the right length. Using a few pieces of the white Cricut 12 x 24 paper I cut all the pieces of the skeleton, layed out the pieces on my fabric and cut out all the pieces. Once I was done I used the approx. four foot skeleton in my window for Halloween...waste not, want not! (In fact, my nephew still has it on his bedroom wall a year later.) I used white flannel, that I already had on hand, and applied fabric stabilizer to make it easier to manage. I attached the bones using the zigzag stitch, with a tight stitch setting, with my sewing machine. It washed beautifully and stood up to the wear and tear of a four year old.

NOTE: I chose not to cut the fabric using my cricut only because I was using flannel and the stabilizer paper wouldn't stick well enough to the mat for clean cutting. However, you may choose to cut the pattern directly on the fabric, but you will go through a lot of cutting mats because of the lint fabric leaves behind. I recoommend doing a test cut with the fabric of your choice before you decide which method you end up using for your project.

The one change I will make this year is to buy a pair of knit gloves or mittens, from the dollar store, and create finger bones. I will also add a removable flap to the bottom of each pant leg for the foot bones, that way they may be removed to avoid tripping when his shoes are off. The flap will lay over the top of his shoes and be held in place with a loop of elastic to go around the bottom of the shoe.
I used some white 3 mm fun foam to cut out the skull, black 3 mm fun foam for the eyes, brows, cheeks, nose & mouth and then attached it to a ball cap so he could see well at night...he LOVED IT and wore it for weeks afterwards. This year he wants to be a pirate skeleton...too bad he's grown so much....I have to start from scratch again, but that's okay...it gives me an excuse to use my new Brother sewing & embroidery machine. Yippe!
We will create an original TLC Design 'Merry Christmas cutout card' using the Cricut Expression, Cricut Design Studio .cut file (TLC Design original design) and embellished with heat embossing. We will also be sharing how to make a homemade embossing folder to be used with a Cuttlebug and/or hand embossing tools.
I have been working really hard this year live healthier and I had bariatric surgery in October. I have lost 60 pounds as of this week, 41 of which has been since surgery. It is a big change, but an exciting one and I cannot wait to see what 2010 brings. There were a lot of other changes in 2009 too. My family and I worked very hard at getting the landscaping completed in my backyard. Staining the fence, planting perrenials, laying bricks, and painting the house made a huge change to my yard. The house is barely recognizable and I am so grateful for all of my family and friends who made it all possible.

I have to say that owning a Cricut Expression has made a real change in my life too. I was able to create wedding invitations and save the dates that turned out amazing and wouldn't have been possible without a Cricut. Being part of the Custom Crops Design Team has also been a wonderful experience. Though I may not have been as prolific as I would have liked, being a part of the team and knowing that many other people enjoy using my .cut files gives me a great sense of pride. I am looking forward to pushing the limits of my Cricut to see what I can create in 2010. I just finished creating a Christmas Village, complete with a church, trees and stores...all in 3D. The Village .cut files are available at http://www.customcrops.com/. The picture of the village is at the top of this post.

My back may still be the one thing that keeps me from doing many things, but with my family and friends I have been able to make some long lasting changes to me and my home.

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and all the best in 2010.

Tanya

TLCDesignhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12261568408588819735noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8539719635290076134.post-33176829767605546532009-11-19T21:07:00.000-08:002009-11-19T21:07:34.306-08:00Many ChangesThere have been many changes in my life lately. This spring and summer I put my Cricut through the paces creating wedding 'Save The Date'magnets, invitations, embossing folders, stamps and decor for a very close friend of the family...aka "my big sister". I finally used my Cricut to cut fabric when I created a dinosaur applique as part of my nephew's Halloween costume and now I am creating more original Christmas cards projects using Design Studio.

I have been on waiting lists for weight loss surgery since 2002 and on Oct. 19/09 it finally happened. Now that I am on the mend and losing weight I am hoping to spend the next few weeks in my craft room. Many changes yet to come and I can't wait!

Happy holidays everyone.TLCDesignhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12261568408588819735noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8539719635290076134.post-55821617851831429512009-05-12T21:58:00.000-07:002009-05-12T22:18:02.127-07:00Design Team LaunchedI am thrilled to announce that I am a member of Custom Crops' new design team! I have included the template layer that I used to line up and size the triangles in the event you want to change the size of the triangles to create a smaller or larger pinwheel layout. Of course, you can remove the box in the 8"x8" layout layer and use any sized paper you would like. Happy cutting! This is a flaw in Design Studio's programming. A simple thing like the order of the day and month completely blocks access to a shared .cut file. For some reason, when I create a .cut file the day, month and year are registered as 27/04/2009. However, for someone else (who lives in another country than me) to open my .cut file the order must become month, day and year. There is a simple fix, so this is more of a pain in the butt than anything. However, many people do not know about the program that helps fix the problem.

If you open a file in Design Studio and receive a "DateTime error" message follow these simple steps to fix the problem.

1. The original request was to make a two page layout in both 8"x8" and 12"x12" sizes, but I thought this would be a great learning opportunity for those who are just learning how to weld or use Design Studio. Use my file to learn who the layout is made and then you create the second page. To do this go to View - New Page to add a new layer to the file - copy and paste the shapes into the new layer and then just move them to their new location. HINT: use the arrow keys to move the shapes. If you count each arrow key stroke then you will know how far to move each shape side to side or up and down. Once you have created the new layer, and all shapes are their proper positions, it may be necessary to 'burp' the layer.

LESSON: To 'burp' select one of the perimetre shapes and delete it, select the opposite side, perimetre shape too. Delete one more shape so that there are no shapes inside shapes, then got to Edit - Undo Delete. Repeat the Undo Delete until all the shapes have reappeared on the virtual mat.
LESSON: To preview one layer at a time, make sure that has a check mark only on the layer that you want to preview. To find this feature right click anywhere on the mat and a box will appear - look for "Include Page In Preview".
LESSON: To save the file 'instantly' uncheck the "Include Page In Preview" in all layers, then save. You will find that the file saves immediately - no waiting!!!!

Here is the link to the Geometric Shape - Layout - Plantin Schoolbook
File name: SqRectCircleFrame.cut

http://www.mediafire.com/?yiaqnadtw1dTLCDesignhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12261568408588819735noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8539719635290076134.post-42408020377545304872009-03-05T23:44:00.000-08:002009-03-05T23:53:25.745-08:00Cutting Stamps....just like butter!I took the plunge and finally cut into that pristine piece of silicone that was in my Cricut Stamp Kit. After a few small circle test cuts I discovered that I had to use the Deep Cut Blade at 6, Speed at 3, and Pressure at 4, which is not the settings recommended on the back of the packaging. No big deal, I always have 'cut' to my own drummer!

My first stamp cutting project focused on heart shapes and the phrase "Save The Date". I used Design Studio to make the most of the 6" x 6" stamping sheet and it allowed me to cut many more shpaes than if I had cut directly from my Cricut. When I placed the stamping sheet on my new mat I found that it was shifting because the adhesive was not strong enough to hold it in place. I ended up putting ATG tape on the back side of the stamping sheet and then placing it on my mat. It stayed put and I was able to cut everything successfully.

Here are photos of the stamps that I have cut thus far.

I have used the stamps to create my own heart patterned vellum that I will use to create folders that will hold the Save The Date Magnet with the couple's photo. (Photo of the magnet will come soon.) I am able to cut four folders per 12" x 12" sheet and I fit in as many small hearts from the negative to make our own table confetti. The folder is held together by two hearts that side into each other. TLCDesignhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12261568408588819735noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8539719635290076134.post-67241236371092719582009-03-03T23:14:00.000-08:002009-03-03T23:14:38.310-08:00It's been too long!It seems like it was only a couple weeks ago that I finished my week long marathon of Christmas card making, but as I glance at the calendar I discover that it is nearly time to start my seeds for the garden. Right now I am working on projects for a summer wedding...not mine. I have the task of making the save the date and the wedding invitations for a very close family friend, Cindy, and her fiance Bill. Their wedding is at the end of July, outside, surrounded by forest, on Bill's parent's acerage. It will be a very casual wedding. The colours, orange, pink and yellow, reflect the fun and relaxed atmosphere that perfectly describe the couple and how they want the wedding to feel.

The Save the Date will be a magnet with the couple's photo placed inside of a vellum folder and attached to a postcard type card then placed in an envelope for mailing. My Cricut has cut all of the magnets, all the strips, hearts and vellum folders. I have also cut all of the stamps used for this project with my very first Cricut stamp kit and the postcard will be embossed using the new Cricut embossing folders. I am in the middle of assembly line mode, but as soon as I have one entirely done I will post a picture. You will have to rely on your imagination for a a few more days....so I hope I at least described them adequately....giggle, giggle.

The wedding invitation will rely heavily on my Cricut too....but I have to keep some secrets for now. What I will say is they will be original, colourful, fun, detailed, and very custom! I am not using one thing that is pre-made or 'ready to use'. I promise to share when they are completed.

Back to work!
The Christmas cards fare or sale and I will post pictures of all the cards in the next several hours. They are available as singles and in one mixed dozen packages. If you wish to purchase any cards please leave me an email through the blog with your email address and I will contact you with further details. For now I am off to make more cards....TLCDesignhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12261568408588819735noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8539719635290076134.post-64815275342364387832008-10-31T07:01:00.000-07:002008-11-07T13:42:54.243-08:00Happy Halloween!I was kept very busy this Halloween season. My sister informed me a couple weeks ago that I am now in charge of all costumes for my nephew for the 'rest of time' - a challenge I gladly accepted. Lukas, my nephew, has two very favourite things - Curious George & tractors. Since making him a tractor could have been very complicated & difficult for a two & half year old to wear Curious George was the winner. I bought two $4 t-shirts, cut one up to create the tail & the face on the hat, a $10 pair of sweat pants, a $3 ballcap, $3 beige earmuffs, $2 for a 2/3 yard of reflective ribbon (for hat) and a yard & a half of yellow broadcloth for $3. The rest of the supplies I already had at home. The big yellow hat has a long strap so he could wear it over his shoulder and act as a treat bag. Tools: sewing machine (embroidered the face), glitter, a styrofoam ball cut in half (eyes), scrap foam sculpted to create tail (not in picture). To make the most of the money I spent my theory was to use a t-shirt & sweatpants that could be worn again. Therefore the costume really only cost $15.

Picture: Grandma and Lukas are busy discovering a new toy.

I also created this glitter carousel pumpkin. I was inspired by a segment on Martha last week and this is my version. It took a lot longer to create that I didn't finish it until November 4th! Oh well, it is ready for next year. I can remove the top & bottom from the witches for easy storage.

I have to admit this was the first time I have spent any time making a costume of decorations for Halloween in a very long time and I enjoyed it emencly. However, it took a week for my back to recover from all the sitting.TLCDesignhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12261568408588819735noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8539719635290076134.post-50413247152106872202008-10-28T17:21:00.000-07:002009-04-06T22:07:19.332-07:00Just in time for Halloween

I wanted to see what I could do with the 12" x 24" cutting mat & paper so I decided to create a 3D pumpkin in Design Studio. I went to bed very tired and frustrated.

I I started having the same problem tonight with a new DS file when it donned on me that it was the Christmas Cheer cartridge that was not cutting at all. After selecting images directly from my Expression keypad I discovered that the software on the cartridge is not the Christmas Cheer software! The images all seem to be Christmas images, but they are all very different from the Christmas Cheer cartridge. The box says Christmas Cheer, the keypad overlay & instruction book say Christmas Cheer and the sticker on the cartridge says Christmas Cheer! Go figure!

I sure hope that I will be able to get the correct software in the next few days. This is not the time of year to have to wait for three weeks for snail mail. I contacted the company where I purchased the cartridge by email tonight and hopefully I will talk to someone in the morning to figure out what to do about this problem.

To use the cartridge now is basically cutting blind. Design Studio does not recognize the software and without the keypad overlay I have no idea what I am selecting for cutting.

At least I know that I did not cause the problem! I was so upset last night ...because I thought I had done something wrong.

TanyaTLCDesignhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12261568408588819735noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8539719635290076134.post-81700129221759765992008-10-26T17:09:00.000-07:002009-04-06T22:08:27.212-07:00Potty Training Sticker ChartI had a request to make potty charts for my nephew.
